'Anybody Who Thinks Sacking Mourinho Is The Answer, It Is Not'

A former Manchester United defender believes that there is still a long way to go before the club can entertain comments about the Red Devils returning to it's former glory days.

Fergie In New Role At Man Utd

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer made a stunning start to his reign as caretaker manager at United, winning his first game in charge 5-1 against Cardiff City over the weekend since replacing the sacked Jose Mourinho last week.

However, the Red Devils legend Gary Neville is reportedly not getting carried away by the heavy win over the Bluebirds, which was the first time United had scored five goals in a single match since Sir Alex Fergurson's last game in charge back in 2013.

"There was an immediate bounce and impact from Ole, however it was only Cardiff and we need to see if they can do it over six months," Neville said on his podcast, according to SkySports.

"If they can do that then they will get the opportunity to play for the club next season. If they do it over six months and then drop back they won't play for the club next season.

"The hard work starts now for United. Anybody who thinks sacking Jose Mourinho is the answer, it is not, the hard work starts now and I'm sure the people in the club are wise enough and knowledgeable to know that."

However,  Neville says it was "comforting" to see his former team-mate Solskjaer alongside Michael Carrick and Mike Phelan on the bench on Saturday.

United will have another opportunity to boost morale as they are at home to Huddersfield Town in their next Premier League match on Boxing Day.
